When Kira's mother dies, leaving her alone, neighbors want her to be "taken to the field" because of her handicap and uselessness to the community, but the Guardians choose to keep her because of her skill with threads. It turns out that 3 orphaned children with unique skills have been mysteriously orphaned and taken in by the Guardians. The children live in luxury now, while most people live in squalor and amidst constant fights and abuse. Kira discovers that it doesn't have to be this way, but what can she do about it? Read the book. It's pretty good.

I really liked this book. It got me guessing what would happen. Although it seems to be written for a younger audience it also hinted at a darker reality of conspiracy--evil actions of those in high places to keep the lower classes in their caste. It emphasizes the importance of caring for others and being an individual in the face of difficulty--looking for your individual talents and strengthening them to deal with the unpleasant opposition that inevitably comes everyone's way.

Book Description

In perhaps her strongest work to date, Lois Lowry once again creates a mysterious but plausible future world. It is a society ruled by savagery and deceit and that shuns and discards the weak. Left orphaned and physically flawed, young Kira faces a frightening, uncertain future. Blessed with an almost magical talent that keeps her alive, she struggles with ever broadening responsibilities in her quest for truth, discovering things that will change her life forever. As she did in THE GIVER, Lowry challenges readers to imagine what our world could become, how people could evolve, and what could be considered valuable. Every reader will be taken by Kira's plight and will long ponder her haunting world and the hope for the future.
