Uno scrittore decide di scrivere un libro sul giorno in cui è stata sganciata su Hiroshima la prima bomba atomica. Si intitola II giorno in cui il mondo finì ed è centrato sull'idea di descrivere cosa stessero facendo alcuni scienziati nucleari nell'esatto momento in cui avveniva la catastrofe. Attraverso una corrispondenza con i tre figli dell'ormai defunto Felix Hoenikkerjl, premio Nobel che ha costruito la bomba, lo scrittore tenta di darcene un ritratto. Apprendiamo così che, proprio in quel giorno fatale, il dottor Hoenikker era riuscito a risolvere un gioco che lo stava impegnando da un bel po' e che la notte della sua morte, avvenuta anni dopo, stava trafficando in cucina con dei pezzetti di ghiaccio: aveva trovato il modo per congelare l'acqua ad alte temperature. Questa sua invenzione è, in realtà, un'arma micidiale, capace di annientare ogni forma di vita sulla Terra. I tre figli cercheranno di utilizzare quest'ultima scoperta paterna.
