It is the end of the world as we know it, or rather as Gaiman and Pratchett know it. Gaiman seems to handle the horror side of things while Pratchett handles the ironic humour and the kids.
I was slightly disappointed by Good Omens: I did not realize how juvenile it was going to be overall. Pratchett seems to love writing about little gangs of kids and that is fine but the cutesy humour is a bit much, most of which seems to centre around kids saying things and getting the words hilariously muddled because they are talking about grown-up stuff and do not quite know about the Big World Out There. Awww, so cuuute!! That got slightly old very quickly.
Overall the humour is very juvenile but not in a way that would particularly appeal to juveniles, I think. It would appeal more to grownups who like reading about cute kids than to cute kids. There is also a Pratchett staple: young pre-pubescent girl who is completely a poster child for Woman Power, or whatever. She totally dominates the boys around her (who fear her temper and swift reprisals) and is described as possessing indomitable strength of character. Fine and well, but a bit over-the-top formulaic and an approach that necessarily requires the boys to be depicted in a sexist light, and to be violently beaten up. Not so sure I entirely support that tactic.
On the whole I would recommend it as a light read. Some of the humour is very good and Gaiman's horror elements can be quite awesome....Continua
I had high expectations for this book, and they have been more than confirmed, I would say that I liked it even more than I imagined! As Clive Barker said, the Apocalypse has never been funnier! And this book is really fun, and exciting, and brilliant, and characters are wonderful, and the story interesting, and reading it in English is even more awesome! :)
When I finish reading a good book I'm always a bit sad, but this time I must say that I was more sad than usual, I miss it already!
4 days. This is how long it took me to get to page 115, trying hard to keep going, before sucumbing poorly to the fact that no, it's not for me.
Must be something about Pratchett's writing, as I usually like Neil (apart from Graveyard book, but everyone fails sometimes).
I found this book tedious beyond belief and of the sort of snotty humour that I don't get and/or like.
