This one is certainly better than the first one. The story moves progressively away from blatant Tolkien stereotypes and into original areas and the pace of events becomes more interesting.
However, characterisation remains minimal, deus ex machina moments still are way too many and the writing could still be edited cutting 30% away to obtain a better product
You see more development in the three main characters as the scope of the world really grows.
I was pleased to discover I liked this book even more than the first. Hopefully they just get better as I work my way through this series. It's nice to have a great series to fall back on whenever you don't know what else to read.
