Some writers know they've got a series long before they start. That was evidently the case with Laurell K. Hamilton whose Anita Blake novels have just released their seventh installment. The aptly named 'Guilty Pleasures' is where it all starts. Hami ... (read full critics)

  • ...or multiple displeasures for me...

What can I say about this book other that I hated every single page of it? I read the damn boring thing because I promised someone I'd do it, but I'm seriously done with all these unoriginal and laughable erotic urban fantasy books.

I read this book in a bunch of hours, mainly for comparison purposes. I wanted to see how it read after attempting to read Brigg’s book and not making it through the whole thing.
Hamilton’s books aren’t my cup of tea, but they certainly do their job and for someone who likes this kind of stories I think they’re as good as they get. The main character’s voice is distinctive, and she comes across as not only wanting to be snarky and different from other girls, but really being that. She’s not a people person and speaks her mind, and while I don’t find this particularly endearing, it works. The author is not telling us “See, I have this character who’s not good with people”, she’s showing us that Anita really isn’t good with people. Brownie points for that (yes, I’m quoting).
The story is action packed but has a good structure in the Scene-Sequel format, so the protagonist doesn’t just run from one plot point to the other, but actually seems to give things some thought (not too much, but some). I think I’ve read the ‘excuse’ “I’m slow today/this year” one time too many for my liking, but I’ve seen characters be dumber than that without any reason at all, so it didn’t bother me that much (yes, I’m rather picky, if you were wondering).
Storywise, there’s nothing going on besides what’s going on, meaning there’s no character arc to speak of or subtext of any kind. If you’re looking for deep themes and reasoning, this is not the book for you. Otherwise the plot’s nice, and the heroine has to work to get what she wants, and take more than a beating in the process.
All in all, if you like urban fantasy as intended today, this is certainly a good book.

It also felt like the author was just adding stuff in as she went along... now there are wererats.. now ghouls... now weird spell enchantment thingies to keep people alive... I'm not big into that kind of writing style. I don't see myself reading more of this series, but who knows :)
