... but were too afraid to ask. Or did not know HOW or WHAT to ask! This is an intensely descriptive and informative book that I used not only for a class that I took with the illustrious Preston Britner, IV...
... but that I drew from when teaching a course in the Yale School of Nursing. Perhaps you have heard of Attachment Theory (Bowlby, Ainsworth, among other researchers in the field). Even so, you've NEVER heard about it like THIS before, guaranteed! Often we associate Attachment Theory with children and their bonds to their mothers. Yet, this book goes far beyond that and explores adult relationships, romance (and why it does or does not always work), grief and loss, and psychopathology (including affective disorders, among numerous others).
Reading and referring back again and again to this book provides me with definitive insights into possible explanations for why we interact with certain people versus others, bond with and maintain affectionate relationships (though not with everyone), and mourn our losses. Plus, Chapters 21 ("Attachment and Psychopathology in Childhood"), 22 ("Attachment and Psychopathology in Adulthood"), and 34 ("Affect, Imagery, and Attachment") provide a richness of information that enables a clinician and researcher like myself to better and more fully understand the reasons why - as adults - some people bond with individuals who are 'toxic' at the same time that healthy relationships take place for other individuals.
This book is an OASIS! It's heavy... in more ways than one (as the book weighs a few pounds, to be sure) but most definitely worth the effort and time.
