  • HANDLING THE UNDEAD

From vampires in his first novel (and film) Let The Right One In, John Ajvide Lindqvist has moved on to the walking dead. However, where RIGHT ONE’s vampires were clearly of the genre, the risen dead, or “Undead”, or “reliving” as people start to cal ... (read full critics)

Not bad. This is rather different from the average zombie story - the evil resides strictly with the living. The setting is suitably bleak and the undead make for a pretty depressed bunch. Which is perhaps unsurprising.

The book stands out for its depiction of how the government tries to get to grips with having two thousand zombies cropping up overnight. There are also a few genuinely chilling moments, the bit about the Fisher being the most memorable in my opinion.
I am not looking forward to a Holliwood treatment of this book.

  • By far the "weirdest" book I've ever read. I loved it! The story was scary and sad at the same time. The characters were very believable. This book made me think... what if... the dead did come back? How would life change? I really enjoyed this book ;-)

  • I didn't really enjoy this book as much as I thought I would.

The beginning is interesting enough, also the ending, but it's definitely not what I expected and still expect from a zombie novel.

I might be quite old-style and always go for the gory/scary/brain-hungry kind of zombie, but I really thought this book had only a big building up of the narrative that ended into a nice final, but not the epic final one would expect.

But its being atypical could be something you might like.
    Suit yourself! ;)

  • Practical Guide to Coping With Zombies

Really chilling and fun book to read. Set against a realistic background of how a government would deal with an "outbreak of zombies". Really chilling and fun book to read. Set against a realistic background of how a government would deal with an "outbreak of zombies". It's all not quite as you might expect or anticipate compared to how zombies are dealt with in other books or in film. This telling is rather "reasonable" and as you'd actually expect - if it were to really happen. The different experiences of several people caught up and effected by events are explained, and I found this episodic style and presentation maintained the pace throughout the book, pretty much.
