Shinn's novel does exactly that--it examines and challenges the reader's previous ideas regarding gender roles and ethnic relations in our society by projecting them onto a seemingly different place and time. A great SF storyline with entrancing characters to really get you thinking about the cultural lenses through which we view issues of ethnicity and gender.
