  The first book of the trilogy is actually very nice: nicely written and well plotted. From the second onward, Pullman begins losing the thread of the story, the narration gets harder to read and new characters are introduced and removed before becoming memorable, while old ones are just forgotten until the grand finale.
  But the thing that really got on my nerves, maybe, was that on the begin of the second book Pullman promised a church-sponsored army of zombies bent to the destruction of parallel universes, and nothing of the kind actually happened.
  A nice book all in all, but there sure are better ways to spend your time.

  Come mi accade abbastanza spesso, mi sono imbattuto in questo libro in modo fortuito. Sono abbonato a The Economist, e lo scorso febbraio l’editore mi ha inviato in omaggio una copia del loro magazine Intelligent Life, una rivista patinata e complessivamente irrilevante, peggio: insulsa. Ma un articolo era interessante: un’intervista a Philip Pullman, autore che non avevo mai sentito nominare.

  Ho scoperto, così, che la trilogia His Dark Materials ha venduto 15 milioni di copie ed è stata tradotta in 40 paesi (Italia inclusa) e che il film La bussola d’oro (uscito intorno a Natale 2007 in Italia, e che non ero andato a vedere perché avevo trovato i manifesti singolarmente poco attraenti) era tratto dal primo volume della trilogia (Northern Lights in America è stato re-intitolato The Golden Compass). Ma quello che mi ha incuriosito di più è che il libro avesse provocato nelle gerarchie cattoliche una reazione ancora più scomposta di Harry Potter: La Association of Christian Teachers ha invitato i suoi aderenti a boicottare la pièce teatrale tratta dal libro. Il Mail on Sunday ha definito Pullman l’autore più pericoloso del Regno Unito. Più di recente, la Catholic League, negli Stati Uniti, ha invitato a boicottare il film perché “vende l’ateismo ai nostri ragazzi”.

  Non potevo lasciarmelo scappare. Mi aspettavo una via di mezzo tra Harry Potter e Il signore degli anelli. Mi aspettavo, cioè, un polpettone fantasy per bambini avviati all’adolescenza o per adulti in vena di nostalgie del bel tempo che fu. Niente di tutto questo. Mi sono trovato tra le mani una storia profonda e ben scritta, problematica sotto il profilo etico e filosofico, attenta persino alla plausibilità scientifica. Il parallelo che mi è venuto in mente è con Ursula K. LeGuin, non tanto quella di The Dispossessed o di The Left Hand of Darkness, ma quella del ciclo di Earthsea. Anche nella trilogia di Pullman, i temi sono quelli al centro della condizione umana, della risposta della nostra coscienza, della nostra umanità, a situazioni ordinarie o straordinarie di tensione. Senza ricette preconfezionate, ma con una ricerca onesta e fragile del che fare e del come comunicare (empaticamente) con gli altri. Laicamente.

  Certo, nel ciclo di Pullman la Chiesa, il Magisterium, è una forza dell’oscurantismo, dell’inumanità, del prevelere dei mezzi sui fini. C’è l’intolleranza, l’inquisizione, il cinismo, la guerra, la tortura, l’assassinio premeditato, la mutilazione dei bambini e l’oppressione degli adulti. Niente che la nostra Chiesa, nella sua storia, non abbia fatto. E che non abbiano fatto le altre religioni istituzionalizzate. Ma il punto non mi pare questo. Il punto mi pare quello che, per Pullman, l’individuo e l’umanità possono trovare una ragione d’essere soltanto “by thinking and feeling and reflecting, by gaining wisdom and passing it on”.

  Tutto il resto è impostura: la vita dopo la morte è una grigia disperazione e le “anime” aspirano soltanto a dissolversi in atomi e a tornare nel grande ciclo della materia. Dio, l’Autorità è un fragile vecchio tenuto prigioniero, che aspira anch’egli a dissolversi nell’universo. Il regno dei cieli è un incubo di dominio. La repubblica del cielo è la piccola vita di ognuno di noi.

  Ma la trilogia è anche una grande storia, un insieme di grandi storie e di grandi personaggi, umani anche se alieni. Un libro visionario, come nell’ispirazione che rimanda esplicitamente a William Blake. Un libro profondamente umano, e per questo “sacro”, come nell’ispirazione che rimanda esplicitamente al Paradiso perduto di John Milton.

  Un libro, quest’ultimo, che non ho mai affrontato. Anche se avrei dovuto farlo, quanto meno per folklore familiare: un fratello di mio nonno paterno, che aveva fatto al più le elementari (siamo agli inizi del Novecento), se ne era innamorato talmente da chiamare due dei suoi figli Milton e Credo (Milto e Crèdo nella storpiatura del dialetto modenese). Proverò ad affrontare la lettura in inglese (anche se non so se me la caverò con l’inglese del 1674), oppure ripiegherò sulla buffa traduzione (ottocentesca) di Lazzaro Papi.

  make a movie of it!

  i put these stories right up there with harry potter, lord of rings and chronicle of narnia although his are a lot, lot darker... but still excellent nevertheless

  Eppure si poteva fare di più...mi ha un pò deluso il finale e il destino di alcuni personaggi in relazione a Lyra. Come se alla fine Pullman non sapesse più che farsene di tutti gli intrecci che ha messo in piedi nei tre romanzi.

  Good read

  A bit slow to start but really got interested once I kept going. The ending totally hit me off guard, I did not expect it at all.
