All Carnegie teached here are skills, how to control your own emotion, how to deal with difficult siutaions, how to say no, etc.

It seems like if you remember all these skills and do accordingly, you will be a charming person who have a lot of friends and being very influential.

This is BULLSHIT. If you are simply ACTING as somebody, I can assure you won't be happy. You could hate yourself one day for being a clown who always wear a mask! You will feel like a FAKE (because you are!).

Please, if you want to improve your interpersonal skills, work on you HEART. Understand yourselves, love yourselves unconditionally. Then you will be a genuinelly HAPPY people and everybody just want to be with you.

The most evident thing in this book is the stereotyping of solutions to problems - and that might not be a stereotype at all as it may actually work when applied. I have yet to test out the skills and principles that I learnt from the book but I have to say that Carnegie got human behaviours and perception down to a T.

That is, possibly a decade ago or so. It seems that the methods and teachings in this book is slightly outdated. Some of the techniques seem too transparent to actually work - surely the modern human mind has been littered with too much television, movies and drama to fall for such simple tricks?

But I suppose that is the ultimate lesson of this book - not to trick or manipulate, but really to change one's behaviour in order to influence others.

    Definitely an interesting read.

    Empathy

Although many counsels are extremely useful - like smiling before speaking, for instance - the main lesson to learn from this wonderful book is empathy.

i liked the book very much and though it dates back from 1936, the stories and examples are still appealing. rather than a set of tricks, the book talks about how to improve your human relationships (and hence i find the title a bit a misnomer). the book contains so many advises that it takes time to absorb, but the real challenge is to bring a couple of suggestions into practise.
it's a book that i would recommend to anybody.

“How to Fake Friends and Manipulate People” or “Get What You Want Without Being Hated” may be more appropriate titles for this book. There are some basic helpful techniques in handling people that would be good for everyone to learn. Many of these actions would make us more courteous and pleasant to be around and interact with.

However, there is an undercurrent of selfishness to the book. It speaks as though it would avoid flattery and insincerity, but the basic focus is to be liked and to get one’s way.

Also, the motivational techniques of this book over the last 80 years has lead to a workforce that managers complain need rewarded and praised every 30 seconds. Parents and Teachers need to train children to handle direct, honest critique without feeling crushed. The aim should not be to praise average performance, but to separate identity and self-worth from performance while teaching the joy of excellence and achievement.

The style of the book reads like an infomercial. Maxims are overstated and biographical success is over-simplified to a single value or action. It suffers all the problems of “Secrets of the Millionaire Mind.”
