SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE
Eight women gather together over the years to piece together an extrarodinary quilt of their own imaginative devising. And as they stitch, we listen to the stories they have to tell of their successes and failures, their lives and loves, their dreams, desires, and the surprise and sometimes joy of living.

I was surprised at how affecting this story was. Most books, I've found, pull you either towards passion and love in relationships or away into the world of sweet, comfortable monogamy. In Otto's world, all three exist, ebbing and flowing together; not always beautifully, but always honest. Through the eight women in the quilting group, we are given a glimpse into defining moments in a woman's life, what binds them together, and what helps them break through the waves when every part of them wants to just relax and let nature take its course. And while the outcome may not always end in happiness, it does result in growth and understanding.

  • page 55: I've had enough. The characters are unpleasant, and often it feels like I'm reading a soap opera for old ladies.
Most of all, though, I really dislike the way it's written.
