The book is constructed by 4 narratives. 2 happen in Italy in the early 60s, in which a dying painter examines the meaning of loneliness to his life, and a blind teenage girl experiences jeopardy with her 'mind eyes'.

The other 2 happen in modern Britain. Distinguished landscapist Peter find himself trapped in an extreme terrain which made him famous. And photographer Suzie is dealing with bereavment-- the lost of her twin brother.

All of the narratives have an art theme. The book is about art. But at the end it also studies human perceptions of reality and illusion. It is worth to take some time to digest the novel, it will make you think.
