Ok, I usually give a max of four stars to books as essays, manuals and reference books. After all this is not the kind of book I'll prize in my memory for years to come.

This book, as the title suggests, explain the steps to take in order to face the event of a robot uprising. And while towering manga-like humanoid robots are covered, most of advices are given regarding the real robots we are manufacturing and markering, from the humble Roomba-like vacuum cleaner, to prototypes which are used in airports, universities and those designed to tend the elderly. Everything that sense the world through sensors, compute and reacts.

It is really well written, thanks to the REAL knowledge of the author (a Ph.D in Robotics), is funny and *believable* at the same time, providing that, like when wathing a movie, you allow yourself to accept the premise. The style is linear, informative and with the occasional witty remark.

So, why does this deserve the fifth star? Simple, for the outstanding and really modern (but with that 50's sci-fi feel) illustrations that punctuate the book. They are really the cheery on top.

  • fancy illustrations, but poor contents. this manual is quite boring and never really funny: miles away from the magic of Max Brooks' "the zombie survival guide"
