Unfortunately this book hasn't translated yet, so you can find it only in Italian.

The darkness faded from the screens, showing an animated sequence: contrasting with a black background it was possible to see the Earth planet lazily rotatingd, like a blue sphere. On the upper side of the screen appeare an alphanumeric counter that changed fast, alternating numbers and letters.
Then, the Earth froze. The counter stopped at the same time, showing:
1214 a.D.
Suddenly, the planet starting to become big and bigger, giving to the four players the impression of falling fast to the ground. They went through clouds and when it was possible to see again, they were able to recognize where they were. They saw Europe, then France, then the Flanders region, in the northern part of the country:nowadays, the region was divided between France and Belgium.
Player, you are in the Flanders region.
It's the 1st March 1241 and the end of the war between England and France is rapidily approaching.
The story as itself is quite simple, but original. Daniel, the main character of the story with Ian (who is a historian), is keen on this strange video game, called Hyperversum. The software of this game, through a virtual reality, was able to re-create a historical situation and the players could act through it, like characters in a movie. Using simple sensors and helmets, they are under the impressionof actually being in the place, at the time of the fact portrayed, but without actually risking of getting injured during the game.
Unfortunately, during this game something got wrong and the four player were actually transported in the France of 1214, without being able to get back to their reality. From that moment, they went through every kind of peril and adventure, in a crescendo that exploded in the final cliffhanger of the book.
Good for us that there's already a sequel.
The writing style isn't bad, even if I expected something more an author that is actually Italian.
She looked for a peculiar style, with pecuiliar words and complicated phrasing, in order to be consistent with the historical moment she is describing.
Too bad that she wasn't able to describe action without using enough synonymouses, and resolving to use words as "the man", "the guy", "the american man" and stuff like that... thing that would have made my poor beta going slightly mad.
But, besides that, she did well her job. It was easy to see there were REAL RESEARCHES behind what she described, even if she clearly stated at the beginning of the book that it was a novel and that she took some liberty from realy history.
Settings were well described and the characters had a clear personality. Ian tended to be a bit too much perfect, the classic hero in a shining armour. But seeing how the book ended, I could forgive her even this.

Forse perchè anche io vorrei essere catapultata in un'altra epoca, conoscere i personaggi storici che tante volte ho visto scritti sui libri di scuola, vivere un'avventura come la loro, ma questo è uno dei libri che più ho amato e che più mi ha fatto sognare..

Hyperversum è un bellissimo romanzo.
Bellissimo perchè approfitta di una piccola trama (quella del videogioco online) per poi trasformarla in una storia a sfondo storico, piena di intrecci e avvenimenti curati in ogni dettaglio. Ma andiamo con ordine: la prima parte, quella che si svolge nella nostra realtà, non mi è piaciuta molto, soprattutto per i dialoghi un pò infantili e anche perchè il modo in cui vengono presentati i personaggi non mi ha coinvolto, tuttavia, la seconda parte, quella "storica", è un vero gioiellino di ricostruzione medievale (per un romanzo, intesi).
I personaggi medievali si muovono e parlano in modo del tutto consono al periodo, caratterizzati ottimamente, mentre i protagonisti sono leggermente sottotono rispetto a loro (specialmente all'inizio, poi la cosa un poco migliora). I luoghi francesi che fanno da sfondo alle vicende sono verosimili e mai stonano col resto degli elementi del romanzo.
Uniche, piccole pecche, consistono nella lunghezza dell'opera, che tuttavia riesce sempre ad accattivare il lettore, e in un uso quasi inesistente della punteggiatura (raramente ho visto i "due punti" e il "punto e virgola", che pur servirebbero).
In sostanza, Hyperversum è un romanzo scritto davvero bene: la Randall ha fatto centro, e questo è indiscutibile.

Realtà o fantasia...?

Sono rimasta piacevolmente colpita da questo libro che ho tenuto lì da leggere da tantissimo tempo;all'inizio mi ha incuriosito la faccenda del gioco di ruolo che diventa reale,poi ho iniziato ad annoiarmi un po' nelle descrizioni degli scontri medioevali (siamo nel 1200,tempo degli scontri Francia- ... Sono rimasta piacevolmente colpita da questo libro che ho tenuto lì da leggere da tantissimo tempo;all'inizio mi ha incuriosito la faccenda del gioco di ruolo che diventa reale,poi ho iniziato ad annoiarmi un po' nelle descrizioni degli scontri medioevali (siamo nel 1200,tempo degli scontri Francia-Inghilterra su suolo francese),ma questo perchè i romanzi storici non sono proprio il mio genere;alla fine sono rimasta intrigata dal salto temporale e da tutto quello che scopre Ian della sua vita da cavaliere di un'altra epoca,tanto che non vedo l'ora di iniziare il secondo volume.
Fondalmentalmente credo che si possa definire un romanzo dove prevale l'amicizia tra i protagonisti che non si abbandonano mai tra di loro,che si aiutano nei momenti di difficoltà,sullo sfondo ci sono anche storie d'amore,a volte così indiscrete che quasi non te ne accorgi.

Very particular, detailed, changing points of view and page-turner.
