Book Description
Meet Ed Kennedy—underage cabdriver, pathetic cardplayer, and useless at romance. He lives in a shack with his coffee-addicted dog, the Doorman, and he’s hopelessly in love with his best friend, Audrey. His life is one of peaceful routine and incompetence, until he inadvertently stops a bank robbery. That’s when the first Ace arrives. That’s when Ed becomes the messenger. . . .
Chosen to care, he makes his way through town helping and hurting (when necessary), until only one question remains: Who’s behind Ed’s mission?
Winner of the 2003 Children’s Book Council Book of the Year Award in Australia, I Am the Messenger is a cryptic journey filled with laughter, fists, and love.

19 yr old male cab driver is protagonist---gets a series of cryptic clues via playing cards. Some humor (he owns a vile-smelling dog called the Doorman), some romance (his best friend also cabbie ignores his interest in her), some psychology (his mother hates him because he reminds her of his dead father). The ending gets kind of messy & confusing---I'm not really sold on it---but a worthwhile read, nonetheless. Has an important message: kindness matters, people.
I loved this book!! I recently discussed it with a YA book club and was blown away by their response and pleasantly surprised. [See home book notes].
Good Book With A Good Message
Nice story, but a rush and nonsense ending, looks like the author was tired of continuing to figure out how to end the story, so he just gave a rough one.
very "sophie's-world"
