Saw where Maya Angelou was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom so finally read this book after seeing the movie two years ago. Now I get why people like Oprah Winfrey respect her so much. She shows the ugliness and cruelty in the world right alongside her own faults and vulnerabilities as a black girl growing into a young black woman during some of the most racist times in U.S. history. The chapters and paragraphs move like floetry. Need to give it 10 stars for Maya Angelou's courage and honesty.

  • I was unprepared for the humour that laces the narrative. She's a brilliant writer, can't recommend highly enough.
