A very valuable popular science summary of how we build our world view - seriously. The author skillfully triggers philosophical considerations and implications while stopping short of developing them - it's enough to understand that there are many ways to build a view of the world, reasonably related with evolutionary drives and constraints in the different species. E.g. "the dumber the brain, the smarter the retina needs to be".
The initial sections on the physics of the eye and light detection are all but required and still less engaging, more standard. Later sections are way more fascinating as they show how our vision works to build a view of constancy of brightness/darkness, continuity of movement, constancy of shape and color in the face of varying positions, illumination, back- and foreground, and so on.
In the end, it feels like we may just be getting close to automating what our eyes and brains have been doing for millions of years, and eyesight can be regarded as one of the great examples of evolution at work - the blind watchmaker making watches that can see.
