"Until one morning in mid-November of 1959, few Americans--in fact, few Kansans--had ever heard of Holcomb. Like the waters of the river, like the motorists on the highway, and like the yellow trains streaking down the Santa Fe tracks, drama, in the shape of exceptional happenings, had never stopped there." If all Truman Capote did was invent a new genre--journalism written with the language and structure of literature--this "nonfiction novel" about the brutal slaying of the Clutter family by two would-be robbers would be remembered as a trail-blazing experiment that has influenced countless writers. But Capote achieved more than that. He wrote a true masterpiece of creative nonfiction. The images of this tale continue to resonate in our minds: 16-year-old Nancy Clutter teaching a friend how to bake a cherry pie, Dick Hickock's black '49 Chevrolet sedan, Perry Smith's Gibson guitar and his dreams of gold in a tropical paradise--the blood on the walls and thefinal "thud-snap" of the rope-broken necks. • In Cold Blood

In Cold Blood I first read In Cold Blood years ago, so many that I couldn’t remember much about it except that I enjoyed it. I suppose the fact that I liked it shouldn’t be surprising; the book is a 20th century American classic, the progenitor of 36 ... (read full critics)

  • Truman Capote’s Score

Poor dead Bonnie Clutter appeared to a friend in a dream. “To be murdered,” she wept. “No. No. There’s nothing worse. Nothing worse than that. Nothing.” In Cold Blood is strewn with snatches of pregnant speech, with glimpses of things that grow and g ... (read full critics)

    Super good...

I plowed right thought it; it was a great read, and proved to me that Capote is worth the hype. I literally could not stop reading! It's disturbing, but captivating. It's the setting what makes this case so horrific. A small town in Kansas is suddenly striked by a tragedy : a murder of four, a warm hearted family loved by the community. This is the first true crime novel for me and it just can't leave you cold. Capote makes everyone human in their own way, even the murderers. Because of their tragic past you are bound to have at least a bit of understanding even if you're disgusted by what they did.
