On November 15, 1959, in the small town of Holcomb, Kansas, four members of the Clutter family were savagely murdered by blasts from a shotgun held a few inches from their faces. There was no apparent motive for the crime, and there were almost no clues.

Five years, four months and twenty-nine days later, on April 14, 1965, Richard Eugene Hickock, aged thirty-three, and Perry Edward Smith, aged thirty-six, were hanged from the crime on a gallows in a warehouse in the Kansas State Penitentiary in Lansing, Kansa.

In Cold Blood is the story of the lives and deaths of these six people. It has already been hailed as a masterpiece.

  • In Cold Blood

In Cold Blood I first read In Cold Blood years ago, so many that I couldn’t remember much about it except that I enjoyed it. I suppose the fact that I liked it shouldn’t be surprising; the book is a 20th century American classic, the progenitor of 36 ... (read full critics)

  • Truman Capote’s Score

Poor dead Bonnie Clutter appeared to a friend in a dream. “To be murdered,” she wept. “No. No. There’s nothing worse. Nothing worse than that. Nothing.” In Cold Blood is strewn with snatches of pregnant speech, with glimpses of things that grow and g ... (read full critics)

The detailed chronicle of a crime as an excuse to expose the horror hidden in the depths of the human soul.
    Or simply a magnificent book!

    Super good...

I plowed right thought it; it was a great read, and proved to me that Capote is worth the hype. I literally could not stop reading! It's disturbing, but captivating. It's all created so vividly that at times you feel part of the horror story, and don't want to put it down for fear you might lose you ... (continue)

It's all created so vividly that at times you feel part of the horror story, and don't want to put it down for fear you might lose your nerve to continue.

A report of a bloody and meaningless crime and a peek in the Kansas crime history of the 60's.
The topic is deeply knot to real life but in a sense the account of the murder is shaped by the fiction.
Yet the writer uses some good narrative tecniques like the juxtapositions of the criminals' lives and those of the Clutters', which go both hand by hand till the murderous climax. In addition, the reader can perceive that from a certain point of the narration the writer uses Smith's idiolect, choosing the therms that Perry wants to learn in his thirst for education.
