Although in this last book in Bradshaw's Arthurian trilogy the role of Gawain/Gwalchmai is the least prominent, I guess it's my favourite of the three. It has the best treatment (to my taste) of the romantic triangle between Arthur, Guinevere and Lancelot (here Bedwyr, for "celticity"'s sake) that I have ever read. It's credible, humane and tragic. The story is told from the point of view of Gwynhwyfar/Guinevere, a truly well-drawn character who is faced with the appalling fact that her good intentions have bad consequences.
Eat your heart out, Marion Zimmer Bradley!
