Every time Bill Bryson walks out the door, memorable travel literature threatens to break out. His previous excursion along the Appalachian Trail resulted in the sublime national bestseller A Walk in the Woods. In A Sunburned Country is his report on what he found in an entirely different place: Australia, the country that doubles as a continent, and a place with the friendliest inhabitants, the hottest, driest weather, and the most peculiar and lethal wildlife to be found on the planet. The result is a deliciously funny, fact-filled, and adventurous performance by a writer who combines humor, wonder, and unflagging curiousity.

Despite the fact that Australia harbors more things that can kill you in extremely nasty ways than anywhere else, including sharks, crocodiles, snakes, even riptides and deserts, Bill Bryson adores the place, and he takes his readers on a rollicking ride far beyond that beaten tourist path. Wherever he goes he finds Australians who are cheerful, extroverted, and unfailingly obliging, and these beaming products of land with clean, safe cities, cold beer, and constant sunshine fill the pages of this wonderful book. Australia is an immense and fortunate land, and it has found in Bill Bryson its perfect guide.

After reading this you won't be able to listen to any news related to Australia and share the author amazement in the fact that no one ever seems to be able to remember who the Australian prime minister is!
    :-)

Funny, but not so much as other Bryson's travelogues. It's funny in bits and pieces across nearly 400 pages, so it also often gets boring or uninteresting between one funny bit and another. I guess Bryson's own words about Australia could apply also to this book: there is such a lot to find in it ... (continue)

I think we read too many Bill Bryson titles too close together as although they are all about different places, they have all seemed to merge into one travelogue.

Probably more interesting if you have visited Australia or are about to do so.

Bill Bryson manages to be an interesting travel writer in an era where everyone has travelled everywhere (and wrote about it on their blog if not on their book).

Nothing really unusual or super exciting happens to him, along his wanderings through australian country, yet the book is as intriguing as the best page-turners. Thanks to Australia itself, no doubt, but especially thanks to Bryson's excellent sense of humour.

A must read for everyone who loves Australia.

  • Bill Bryson is awesome in an underwhelming way, I would love it if he lent his voice to Hollywood, he sounds so compelling and reassuring. A great author and narrator.

Absolutely brilliant. One of the funniest books ever. Just look for the English publication, being the Italian translation truly disappointing.
