The author relates this somber story with great dignity and sensitivity. The reader discovers the sensibilities of an earlier era, a time which had no concern for animal rights, or any other consideration than survival in a harsh environment. This urge to survive would lead some to the depths of sadness and cause them to violate some of the most basic principles of human behavior.
Powerful reading, and in some cases more meaningful than its literary offspring, Moby Dick
An incredible account of a long gone era, wonderfully narrated and thoroughly documented. A real page turner, you really can't put it down until it's over.
