  • 'In the Woods' by Tana French

When I first picked up Tana French's In The Woods at JFK airport on my last trip to New York last October I envisaged it would tread similar territory to Edna O'Brien's dark, claustrophobic In the Forest. After all, they're both Irish crime books by ... (read full critics)

    What's lurking in the woods?

This page-turner kept me awake for 2 days straight. Very satisfying read.

Maybe because this murder investigation is set in Dublin, Ireland and therefore deemed exotic from my north american standards. Nonetheless, it is refreshingly different from the countless predictable thrillers churned out every week...

One small regret... that the author did not provide a closer to the subplot in the story: the mysterious incident in the main character's childhood. Maybe she is keeping it for the the sequel?

  • I really hated that the author didn't totally resolve the plot. So much was put into the other missing children story and then she just dropped it.

  • The story is a bit too long, and if you are looking for something with a happy ending, you might need to rethink about starting this one. Didn't feel relieved at all after finishing reading it.

A debut for the writer: I found the story of the investigation a bit too long, but wound up well towards the end. Effective characterazation of Maddox and Ryan and other people moving in and around this very sad and true to life story. It contains some very beautiful desciptions of Dublin urban areas and of course of the woods. Poignant love story, too.

  • Seriously lacking, terrible ending

In the Woods was billed as a wonderfully told, engaging Irish mystery novel, but I was incredibly disappointed by it. I expected richness, and found some, but not nearly as much a I'd hoped for. The central mystery, which is what attracted me to the book, was never resolved, and the secondary mystery came to what I found an unsatisfying conclusion.

This was the only book I hated so much that I gave it away immediately after finishing it.

  • *** This comment contains spoilers! ***

It is a psychological thriller that kind of creepy, richly atmospheric in its complexity of psychological suspense; well-written and stunning, but the downside, for me, is how the book ends. :`( Ryan is really catastrophic; yet, somehow I expects him to do much better than that.
