Masterpiece

The story is simple but strongly engaging - it's about the brief adventure of a cynical youngster, Holden Caulfield, who hated "phony" stuff. The story is simple but strongly engaging - it's about the brief adventure of a cynical youngster, Holden Caulfield, who hated "phony" stuff. He may not seem to be very likeable, but as you read the story you can clearly feel his pain, loneliness and disillusion in this world of phoniess and hypocrisy. At certain points I wondered: is he rotten, or is the world rotten? Or both? Is he or the world insane? A very thought-provoking book indeed.

Confusion saves the day. I really mean it.

When I was reading Ken Kesey's One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest, I searched quite casually online and found out that it is often "studied" together with William Faulkner's "The Sound and the Fury" and Salinger's "The Catcher in the Rye".
I first heard of this book in McCourt's Teacher Man, when he recalled his troubles with the Principal after recommending this book to his students for an easy read, just to get them started in reading something. I was mostly curious, and I didn't expect much from an easy read, indeed.
The fact is, while I continued to read it as fast as the mood carried me, I wasn't crazy about it at all before I reached the "80-percentile". Holden was just wandering and complaining all the time.
He was still complaining in the last 20%. But I love it. I love it when the author tries to do it with good intentions, and with some elegance. That's all I'd talk about this novel.
You know, I feel like Holden myself these days. How couldn't I love it?
Salinger is very skillful and all, having successfully used such a monotonic voice to draw readers' attention. Damn, was I silly. But I did like it in the end.

Me lo ricordavo un po' noiosetto ed effettivamente lo è ancora, nonostante la lettura in lingua originale lo renda migliore perché l'inglese, almeno da parlante non nativa, non mi è parso invecchiato rispetto al presente, mentre l'unica traduzione italiana esistente era già vecchia quando ho letto i ... Me lo ricordavo un po' noiosetto ed effettivamente lo è ancora, nonostante la lettura in lingua originale lo renda migliore perché l'inglese, almeno da parlante non nativa, non mi è parso invecchiato rispetto al presente, mentre l'unica traduzione italiana esistente era già vecchia quando ho letto il romanzo per la prima volta, 15 anni fa, anno più anno meno.
Ma è un'annosa questione quella della traduzione di questo romanzo, in cui non mi addentro pur trovandola molto interessante per le possibili disquisizioni sull'età media di una traduzione e su come tramite il confronto tra testo di partenza e testo di arrivo si possa osservare l'evoluzione della lingua, quella parlata soprattutto. Sto divagando.
Il romanzo non è brutto e ha un'anima; Holden è un adolescente, dotato di anima pure lui. E' un ribelle che non si compiace di esserlo, quindi lo è davvero. Però non è che le avventure che vive in quei pochi giorni tra la “fuga” dal college e il ritorno a casa dei suoi siano molto appassionanti. A volte si dilunga un po' troppo. Nel complesso, il romanzo di formazione c'è, si sente nitido tra le righe di quel freddo dicembre newyorchese degli anni 50. Forse è uno di quei romanzi da leggere esattamente quando è il loro momento per coglierne tutta l'essenza, per innamorarsene.

Vattelapesca?

Nella traduzione italiana, mi dicono, "and all" diventa "e vattelapesca". Passi il gergo giovanile del tempo che fu, ma "vattelapesca" invecchia (è bell'e morto), "and all" no. Ammesso che tutti i lettori italiani abbiano la stessa edizione del Giovane Holden, mi chiedo se possa piacere comun ... (continue)

Ammesso che tutti i lettori italiani abbiano la stessa edizione del Giovane Holden, mi chiedo se possa piacere comunque. A me non sarebbe piaciuto. E invece, con i suoi "and all", mi è piaciuto. Forse più di quanto sarebbe concesso a una lettrice alla soglia dei 28 anni. Ma si sa: l'importante è conservarsi 16enni nello spirito, quindi buon "vattelapesca" a tutti.

Teen angst hits paper

I think this book captured so perfectly both the utter nonsense and deep life-changing thoughts that run through your head as a teenager.
