Novelist Joanne Harris has received widespread critical acclaim as the creator of richly evocative tales that vividly bring to life the world, rituals, and cuisine of rural France. Now the bestselling author of Holy Fools and Chocolat widens her horizons with Jigs & Reels -- her first ever collection of short stories.

Each of the twenty-two tales in this enchanting collection is a surprise and a delight, melding the poignant and the possible with the outrageous, the magical, and, sometimes, the eerily haunting. Wolf men, dolphin women, aging monsters, defiant old ladies, suicidal lottery winners, suburban witches, and middle-aged manufacturers of erotic leatherwear -- in Jigs & Reels where the miraculous goes hand in hand with the mundane, the sour with the sweet, and the beautiful, the grotesque, the seductive, and the disturbing are never more than one step away.

Whether she's exploring the myth of beauty, the pain of infidelity, or the wonder of late-life romance, Joanne Harris once again proves herself a master of the storyteller's trade. An incomparable reading experience awaits anyone who willingly surrenders to the spins and leaps of Jigs & Reels.

  • Jigs and Reels

The stories in Jigs and Reels are like little peeks into the mind of the author, Joanne Harris. We've already seen the kind of work she is capable of: historical, in Five Quarters of the Orange and Holy Fools, foodie in Chocolat, and pastoral in Blac ... (read full critics)

I'm not normally a lover of short stories as they don't give you enough time to get into them. However, Jigs and Reels has to be the best collection I have read to date. Yes, it surpasses the collection of Dylan Thomas that we read at school! This author has fantastic observational skills and the ability to collect information that can be woven into something quite fantastic. If you like short stories then these are a must and if like me, you are a bit sceptical, give this collection a go. You will be pleasantly surprised.

  • I have never enjoyed the short story genre. However as this collection is by one of my favourite authors, I have dipped into it unsuccessfully.

  • Clever collection

Joanne's short stories are as good as her novels. Sorts out the men from the boys :) Shows that one is never too old for red high heels and literally cooking up a monster.
