“As a professor who teaches what is probably the only Taiwan History course offered outside of Asia, I am in desperate need of good first-hand accounts of the fifty-five years (1945-2000) of KMT rule on the island. What Professor Chang has written will wonderfully help fill that need. For many years Taiwanese dared not speak out about their sufferings. Today, even though conditions on the island have ameliorated, the habit of silence continues to be preferred as the prudent course. This is why Prof. Chang’s book on ‘the 2-28 Incident’ will be welcome and will, we hope, be followed by further narratives of other incidents and events in this tragic history.”—Beatrice S. Bartlett , Professor of History, Yale University

“The content [of this book] is striking in its immediacy, heart-warming in its humanity, and as a historical document it is extraordinarily informative about otherwise shadowy events. It is truly a deeply moving story, or collection of stories, that will long stay in my memory.”
—F. W. Mote, the late Professor Emeritus of Chinese History, Princeton University.
