    Poor Hardy! The theme of passion and marriage with its despair and darkness. Hardy can see no hope for those who marry. To him love can only exist in a pure form outside of the legal enactment. He obviously hates marriage and can only see it as the destroyer of love. No doubt his writing was coloured by his own experience. A sad, despairing book. No light, no real understanding of love - only darkness!
