This book is an easy, mindless read. A little too "chick-litty", which I can't appreciate. This book is just full of negative energy, which I would pick up and project into my own life as I read it. Ugh.

Well, not much of a great book. A memoir which aims at being witty and humorous but rarely if ever manages to.

I've read worse books though. Good language practice anyway.

  • Dress your family in butter and oil

A really entertaining tale about a stubborn secretary slash proto-blogger slash sassy person making its way out of life's difficulties.

This book is Julie Powell's memoir about her "Julie/Julia" cooking project. Julie was an unhappy person with a dead-end job, and in order to find her way, she cooked through Julia Child's famed recipe book "Masting the Art of French Cooking" in a year. Unexpectedly, this project changed her life.

This book drew my attention because of a sentence in the movie trailer Julie & Julia - "I was drawning and she (Julia Child) is the one that pulled me out of the ocean." I was very curious and decided to read through the book, hoping to find the secret recipe of life.

Unfortunately I didn't find it. While this is a very good topic and the book could have been a masterpiece about food and life, it is actually not very well done. Although Julie keeps saying Julia Child's book changed her life, she could not really explain why, other than the fact that the press noticed her blog and made her a famous writer.

That said, this is an entertaining chick lit, and is a good beach read (if you don't mind foul language and strong political opinion, which I don't). Julie is quite honest and likable. Therefore I actually enjoyed this book.

Unfortunately, I could not find deeper meaning behind it. This is only a beach read after all.
