I was a bit underwhelmed after reading all the hype about the Jack Reacher series of violent action novels. This book serves as in introduction of sorts allowing the reader to acclimatize to the Reacher character.

The story is engaging enough though I thought Reacher would be a bit more impressive - he is essentially supposed to be a "super hero" of sorts, isn't he? With all his special forces training he is supposed to be reminiscent of movie action heroes like Schwarzenegger, Willis, Stallone, and so on, and let's face it, the heros those characters play are entirely the stuff of fantasy. So why does Reacher come across as pretty tame in comparison? I was looking forward to over-the-top, unrealistic fantasy action. I put it down to Child's first attempt and not yet being in the swing of things. (It turned out that the second book in the series was much more like what I was expecting.)

Overall, Child definitely has skill. His characters are not wooden, the female love interest bits are not clunky, the action, when it happens, is exciting. Though I was slightly disappointed with this first book, I would still recommend it because it does provide a good introduction to the world of Jack Reacher, which stands one in good stead when reading the second book of the series which suffered from none of the weaknesses of this book. Besides, I have a sneaky feeling that if I had read the first book after having read some others in the series, I would probably have enjoyed it more, having been acclimatized to the characters and type of story found in this series. Besides, maybe you would really enjoy this one (many have), in which case the second book might even blow you away.

This is definitely a series to consider for quick, light reading where entertainment and kick-ass action of the mostly mindless sort is wanted. Perhaps a holiday read? A break between more serious literature? Just a break of the purely escapist sort? Take your pick.

This is the first Jack Reacher novel that I read and, honestly, it doesn't make me feel wanting to read another one.

The story is good, full of suspance and twists. The hero is all right, if a bit too macho and provided with that annoying quality of not just always being the smartest guy in the room, but turning otherwise smart people into idiots as soon as he steps into a room.

It's the style that really drags the novel down. It's verbose, occasionaly repetitive, and full of "elementary my dear Watson" moments where the author takes the pain to explain things that were already evident.

The same novel could have been written (better) in 500 pages.
