One of the best books I ever read. A modern-times myth, and one of the few contemporary authors that still managed to say something original and meaningful about the WWII era

It took me months to finish this book. It was as if for all this time I was really living very close to this Nazi, named Aue, who is telling his war experiences. Even if he was a very unkind person in all possible ways, passing so much time with a character, does make you empathize with him.

It took me months to finish this book. It was as if for all this time I was really living very close to this Nazi, named Aue, who is telling his war experiences. Even if he was a very unkind person in all possible ways, passing so much time with a character, does make you empathize with him.
In the end, Aue isn't really able to confess or to feel guilty about what his war crimes, whereas he does confess some terrible things about his private life.
The book is fascinating and makes you wonder about the personalities and lives of the perpetrators, without ever answering such questions.
