I think the idea Cooper had for the "serial killer" is quite interesting, but I admit I found a bit difficult to follow the events especially at the beginning: too many time-warps to remember, once back to the present, which day we were reading of before jumping to the 8th century. Intriguing indeed those parts set at the abbey.
The linguistic error at the beginning is simply ridiculous: why in the world couldn't Cooper check on the Internet the exact spelling of "Alea Iacta Est" (in the book: alia jacta est)? I agree with those who found the editing of this book quite appalling.
As for the story itself, at the end of the day is just an ordinary thriller.
