An insiders' description of the life and manners of those who lived around literature in Milan and Rome 1950 . Focussed on Carlo Emilio Gadda, an earlier writer the author and his friends visited and learned from in his later years. Lots of witty allusions will be transparent to those who followed Italian literary life in the period - I presume.
Endearing to us having grown up in Lombardy then is Arbasino's description of how his bourgeois parents and their relations spoke: interspersing Italian with French and dialect, diminutives... we do recognise glimpses from the mannerisms and style of our own parents' and grandparents.

very good but only if you really like both Arbasino and Gadda. Occasionally very insider-ish.
