For being one of the first (and reportedly finest) female writers of erotic literature, in Little Birds Anais Nin shows very little knowledge of women's desire and sexuality. All of the scenarios portrayed in these short stories are so obviously influenced by male fantasies. Furthermore, racial, Orientalist and petit-bourgeois stereotypes abound: women of colour being hypersexualized, young models eagerly losing their respectability at the hands of old bohemian and depraved painters and above all, the ineluctable fate awaiting all women, to be awakened and transformed by the overwhelming power of male sexuality.
If this is the best of the genre, I shall never try anything else.

  • More Please... Oh No, She's Dead Now.

Yes, I reckon that this is what Anias Nin does best, short stories of erotica. With dazzling writing, a good short story is one you don't want to end, n'est-ce pas?
