  This book is full of SEAL's bravado which is fine with me. Any elite, no, even any self-respect individual, will definitely has such an attitude. The difference is only that some may express it and some don't.

  One very controversial topic Luttrell does express openly and strongly is his despise of the ROE (rules of engagement). As a military history nuts myself, I have to agree that he does have some points. Although direct actions and brute force might not be the best options, any self-set limitation on the scale of the violence is really stupid. It's called "woman's soft nature" (婦人之仁) in Chinese proverb. General Sherman said, "War is Hell." How can we expect it's otherwise? When fighting a war, you have to be more cunning, more violent than your enemy. If they don't have any restriction, why should you?

  This is an amazingly exciting book about the Battle for Murphy's Ridge and its aftermath. It's inspiring, bloodcurdling, and informative at the same time.

  The only negative sides are the famous SEAL arrogance which bleeds through on every page, and his discouraging take on Rules of Engagement. While he's certainly entitled to those views (and they are understandable considering the paradox the ROEs placed him in), he espouses a dangerous viewpoint for modern soldiers to take in the battle for hearts, minds and credibility.
