As teenage werewolf Kalix MacRinnalch is pursued through the streets of London by murderous hunters, her sister, the Werewolf Enchantress, is busy designing clothes for the Fire Queen. Meanwhile, in the Scottish Highlands, the MacRinnalch Clan is plotting and feuding after the head of the clan suddenly dies intestate.

As the court intrigue threatens to explode in all-out civil war, the competing factions determine that Kalix is the swing vote necessary to assume leadership of the clan. Unfortunately, Kalix isn’t really into clan politics - laudanum’s more her thing. But what’s even more unfortunate is that Kalix is the reason the head of the clan ended up dead, which is why she’s now on the run in London…

"Moonglow was rather anxious about this. She didn't relish the prospect of being apprehended by an irate landlord. Moonglow had long black hair, soft pretty features, a firm belief in astrology, a kind nature and no experience of irate landlords. She was certain that if she encountered one, she'd find it very awkward."

"So Kalix had been registered with a doctor in Scotland, and through this she had been referred to a psychiatrist who had prescribed diazepam for her anxiety. Kalix disliked her psychiatrist but she liked the diazepam."

"'The plumber?' said Malveria, puzzled. She had little idea of what life in this world was really like.
'The pipes downstairs are leaking again.'
'Surely you have minions to do these things for you?'
'I do. But the junior minion got it wrong last time and the senior minion - my property manager - is away at a conference so I have to take care of it myself.'
    Malveria shook her head."

"Moonglow was indignant. ' Imagine you were a homeless young werewolf and other werewolves were trying to kill you. How would you like it?'
'I guess it might drive me to diazepam.'"

"Having their first pizza for breakfast made their new place feel like home. "

    "'What's wrong with them?'
'They're stupid,' repeated Kalix, who lacked the vocaboulary to construct a really telling insult.
'The Fire Queen saved your life,' pointed out Moonglow.
'That just shows how stupid she is,' replied Kalix, and hid under the quilt."

"'Did you meet by accident in some romantic spto, for instance the Beautiful Frosted Fairy Glade of the jewellery counter at Tiffany?'
    'No.'
    'Then how?'
'He rang the bell,' said Thrix. ' And I let him in, which was a mistake.'"

"'I've reached a new low point of misery, humiliation and uselessness,' thought Kalix, ' through which even anxiety can't penetrate.'"

"Thrix didn't feel comfortable when confronted by great public displays of emotion. The result of a rather cold upbringing, a therapist had one told her. But Thrix didn't really approve of therapy either, and had only gone for reasons of fashion, when a therapist seemed like a necessary accessory."

"...and connected to doom-metal.com. Surely the only music suitable for a time like this. He studied the radio station's play list. The was a list of genres: traditional doom, atmospheric doom, gothic doom, metal doom, progressive doom, death doom, suicidal doom, funeral doom and various others. A wide choice. Daniel could appreciate the subtleties involved."

"You would be surprised at the trouble this can cause in the human world, with the difficoulties involved in the postal services.'
    'Postal services?' said Xakthan.
'A primitive method for transporting goods. Very often it leads to chaos.'"
