  The book on which I discovered that reading the original and its translation makes for two different books. I lost my faith in translation, then, but I acquired a greater one in Language. The more so, seeing that Conrad was a Pole!
  And then, Jim is such a vivid, complex, flawed, endearing character! You cannot but care deeply for him. Add to this a great narrating voice, wonderful descriptions and a plot that might have been over-melodramatic in lesser hands, but just comes out as painfully true from Conrad's magic pen... Quite a masterpiece.

  Al termine della lettura di questo grande romanzo una domanda continua ad aleggiare nella testa del lettore: chi è Lord Jim. Un idealista perso dietro a romantiche idee di onore e lealtà che comunque ne sostanziano l'unicità della personalità o un semplice comune essere umano che non riesce a venire a patti con la propria paura di fronte ad una sfida enorme presentatagli dal destino? L'esito fnale della vicenda non chiarisce il dilemma. Anche se Conrad ha voluto dare una seconda chance al suo personaggio non ci si libera dall'impressione che Jim abbia inseguito ostinatamente un riscatto che in realtà assomiglia a una perenne fuga dal diventare consapevoli di se stessi. Ma anche questa impressione non ci dice se davvero le cose nel cuore di Jim siano andate così (lo scrutiamo sempre con lo sguardo di Marlowe e non abbiamo mai accesso ai suoi pensieri). Perchè forse ha vissuto consapevolmente e coerentemente il resto della sua vita, identificandosi appieno in un destino che lo ha portato a vivere fino alla fine dei suoi giorni in uno sperduto villaggio delle isole orientali. E' proprio questa incertezza sul valore morale delle scelte compiute da Jim che rende affascinante e immortale il personaggio creato da Conrad.

Lord Jim tells the story of a young, idealistic Englishman - 'as unflinching as a hero in a book' - who is disgraced by a single act of cowardice while serving as an officer on the Patna, a merchant-ship sailing from an Eastern port. His life is blighted: an isolated scandal assumes horrifying proportions. An older man, Marlow, befriends Jim, and helps to establish him in Patusan, a remote Malay settlement. There he achieves a kind of peace, but his courage is put to the test once more. Lord Jim is one of the most profound and rewarding psychological novels in English. Set in the context of social change and colonial expansion in late Victorian England, it embodies in Jim the values and the turmoil of a fading empire.

  I think it has been the most beautiful novel I ever read. The first time I read it when I was 10-11 years old, translated in Italian, after the movie with Peter O'Toole. After nearly half a century it still bears to me the teaching to the courage of living growing an ethic, despite all. I got at the end this original for an examination at the university for the course of English, and discovered that other girls had made the same choice. I read it again several times, and every time it spoke to me even more deeply as a sign of everybody's fate, and of my fate of course. Just I still love it like the first time a read it.
