The greatest achievement of this novel is also its biggest downfall. The best bits of it are those that relate to you. Therefore, it will mean different things to you at different times in your life, and different things to different people. I know this is true for most things, but the problem here is that the parts that don't relate to you seem longer and slower paced.

However, it is a very well written book, which does indeed cover all aspects of love. It is this fact that makes it so good: it will appeal to nearly everyone. Both sides of love are explored and exposed. On one side of the coin, there is crushing loneliness: the worst of human emotions; and on the other side, unending requited adoration: the greatest human emotion. If you're single, married, divorced, widowed or anywhere in between, there is something that relates to you, and this is the part you will enjoy the most.

It is hard to think of someone who would not enjoy some part of this book, but equally difficult to imagine someone who would enjoy all of it. I can appreciate all its merits, yet there were definite moments that I felt the story was dragging or tedious. Which I suppose is another aspect of love.
