In the early 1900s polite Chicago society was rocked by terrible scandal as renowned architect, Frank Lloyd Wright, ran off with Mamah Cheney, a client's wife. Abandoning their families and reputations, the lovers fled to Europe and exile. Mamah's actions branded her an unnatural mother and society relished her persecution. For the rest of her life Mamah paid an extraordinary price for moving outside society's rules, in a time that was unforgiving of a woman's quest for fulfilment and personal happiness. Headstrong and honest, her love for Frank was unstoppable. This portrait of her life as his muse and soulmate is a moving, passionate and timeless love story.

Not really what I had expected when I started, but a very interesting story. As a former Oak Park resident it was interesting to see some of the history there. And it is tremendously gratifying to think how different society has become in 100 years - that women can make choices for themselves without becoming pariahs. I definitely did not expect the ending and cried when I finished the book. Very good story.

  • The perils of true love - a 1910 perspective

What we take for granted today -if your mariage turns out to be a mistake the first time around, you get divorced and move on - was anything but a given for American women at the turn of the 20th century. Although divorce was possible it meant no custody, no support and becoming a social pariah. Whe ... (continue)

What we take for granted today -if your mariage turns out to be a mistake the first time around, you get divorced and move on - was anything but a given for American women at the turn of the 20th century. Although divorce was possible it meant no custody, no support and becoming a social pariah. When Mamah Cheny decides to leave her husband and children to follow Frank Lloyd Wright, she ignored how difficult the future would be. True love is a wonderful thing but one is not alone in the world. This story, based on the true story of the love affair, in addition to being a good read offers a primer on the history of the feminist movement (and how restricting the issues to gaining the vote left a terrible hole in equality issues). Mamah comes off as a squeeky clean, intellectual who was terribly misunderstood -too advanced for the times. But the choice she makes is not innocent. What was missing for me was a little more of a critical eye.

  • I have always loved Frank Lloyd Wright as an architect. I did not know alot about him personally. I found it interesting that he was such a spend thrift and as successful as he was in his field, he died virtuously penniless. There was something just a little off-balance about him.

  • The book caught my eye on the shelf because of its beautiful stained glass window cover. I picked it up and opened it - the quote inside says people will pick this up because of Frank Lloyd Wright, but they will keep reading because of Mamah Cheney. (That was so me! hmmm... maybe it's meant to be) ... (continue)

It's the story of a love affair between the incredible architecture and one of his clients.
I'm only into it the first 50 pages, but i love the story so far. I really reading of Chicago in the early 1900s. The author slips in the history and city very well, without it being a teaching lesson.
I hope it keeps up this well throughout the book!
