I've heard that Flaubert was able to last even one entire month writing a single paragraph. Some have told me that he spent days fixing a single phrase, placin a comma in the appropiate place. As a result of such dedication an effort, of a person's sacrifice for the perfection of a writing, we, the readers are highly satisfied. We can dream with that world that the author shows to us. We can feel the emotions, feelings and situations contained in this novel. We are permanently happy reading this book. There is nothing better than reading the great writers, to overcome the big ammount of consumer literacy that we have to face currently.
Madame Bovary is a ignorant, selfish, clasless woman. She is adicted to money and to love. She reads a lot, and these readings feed her craving for love (in the sense of loving as a teenager). She gets married with a doctor. The doctor loves her deeply, but she is not satisfyied, because she can't recognize satisfaction in any emotion different from the first infautation. As soon as infautation is gone, she feels as though someone has lied to her. She doesn't understand that all the relationships must evolve, and that she should have looked for valuable things in her husband. She devotes herself to look for lovers to satisfy that eternal desire of being inlove. But, besides, she also dedicates herself to spend money uncontrolably. She justifyies herself saying that her life is so emply, that she has to fill it with something and that something is the uncontrolable waste of money. When she finds herself broke, after stealing from her family and ruining her daughter's future, she consumates her ultimate act of selfishness and kills herself in order to not to face her responsibilities. As it allways happens, it is her daughter who suffers the consequences of her mother's stupidity. The widower dies shortly after his wife's suicide, and the little kid becomes an orphan and moves with some far relatives.
The most wonderful thing about this book is it's vigency: men and women as Madame Bobary suround us wherever. People that only valorate the moment, the firs emotions. I've seen it in men and women: "if I'm not inlove with you any more, it is because you have cheated on me. You took off your mask and now I don't love you any more. It's your fault that I'm not inlove with you any more as I was the first two weeks back in the time when I met you". I think that this acusation is so illegitime, that sometimes I feel angry about it. Nobody is guilty because our own feelings. We are in control of our bodies and souls. ¿Why to put in other's hands something that is ours and only ours, and that is easier to control by ourselves? It is possible to be inlove as the first day, and one and only one is the owner of the own destiny.
I feel angry also with the idea of people developing such a destructive adiction as the waste of money. The justification is that the uncontrolable spending balances the lack of romance and atention in the family relationship. We all have needs and we all have adictions, but I think that some of them are truly destructive, and I sincerely think that one of the worst is the adiction to injustificated money waste. I know that we must have pitty on the adicted people, because they are sick persons. But I still think that one has much more control in the own life, and that there is allways a way out, and that if we have to be addicted to something, at least we should choose something less expensive and destructive of others. I thank God because I'm not addicted to anything so expensive (I have some addictions, but they are really cheap, such as bitting my nails or so)
Another good thing about this novel, is that I could write about it forever. I love the kind of readings that make me think, and relate the story with the currenl world. For example, we can relate madamme Bovary with the financial crisis of the United States. We can see that this country is full of madames Bovaries, men and women that have everything, but are not satisfyied, and want more, and that "more" is something that they will never acomplish. And we should not forget that Flaubert used to say that he himself was madamme Bovary. Surely, he was also unsatisfyied, and he blamed his own insatisfaction, such as he blamed his heroine.
He oído que Flaubert podía tardar hasta un mes completo en escribir un solo párrafo. Me han contado que incluso tardaba días en perfeccionar una sola frase, en ubicar una coma en el lugar apropiado. El resultado de tanta dedicación y esfuerzo de una persona, el sacrificio de su propia vida por la perfección de un escrito, de una composición, de una redacción; es la satisfacción de lectores que, como yo, soñamos con los mundos que el autor nos pinta. Las descripciones de emociones, sentimientos y situaciones que hay en esta novela, nos llenan de un gozo permanente. Nada mejor que leer a los grandes, como antídoto contra tanta literatura de consumo que tanto nos bombardea en los tiempos modernos.
Madame Bovary es una mujer ignorante, egoísta, sin clase. Una mujer adicta al dinero y al amor. Lee mucho, y estas lecturas alimentan su ansia de enamorarse como una adolescente. Se casa con un doctor que la adora con cada fibra de su ser. Pero ella no está satisfecha, pues no sabe reconocer ninguna satisfacción en una emoción diferente al primer enamoramiento. Tan pronto este pasa, ella se siente como si la hubieran engañado. Es una mujer que no entiende que todas las relaciones deben evolucionar, y que debió haber buscado en su esposo todas las cosas valiosas que este le ofrecía. Ella se dedica en cambio a buscarse amantes para satisfacer ese deseo eterno de estar enamorada. Pero además, se dedica a gastar dinero sin control alguno. Lo hace con la justificación de que su vida es tan vacía, que necesita llenarla con algo, y ese algo es el gasto incontrolado. Cuando se ve en bancarrota, después de haber acabado con la fortuna de su marido, después de haber desfalcado a su familia, y robado el futuro de su hija, y en el colmo de su egoísmo, se quita la vida para no tener que enfrentar sus responsabilidades. Como siempre, es la hija la que sufre las consecuencias de la estupidez de su madre. El viudo muere muy poco después de la muerte de la madame y la niña queda huérfana, viviendo pobremente con unos familiares lejanos.
Lo maravilloso de este libro reside en su pasmosa actualidad: mujeres y hombres como madamme Bovary nos rodean por todas partes en nuestra vida contemporánea. Personas que solo valoran la vivencia, la primera emoción. Lo he visto en hombres y mujeres: "si ya no estoy enamorado(a), con la primera sacudida hormonal, es porque tu me has engañado, y te has quitado la máscara. Has sido tu quien no ha podido lograr que yo conserve esa sensación de enamoramiento que tuve las primeras dos semanas, cuando te conocí". Yo considero esta acusación tan ilegítima, que a veces me indigna cuando oigo que alguien lo cuenta. Nadie tiene la culpa de lo que sentimos o dejamos de sentir. Nosotros mismos controlamos nuestro cuerpo y nuestra mente. ¿Por qué poner en manos de otro lo que es mucho más fácil hacer directamente? Se puede estar enamorado (a) como el primer día, y hasta el día que se quiera. Uno y solo uno es el(la) dueño(a) de su destino.
Me indigna también la idea de desarrollar una adicción tan dañina como el dinero, con la disculpa de que el gasto descontrolado equilibra la falta de romance y atención en la relación familiar. Todos tenemos necesidades, y desarrollamos adicciones, pero algunas son verdaderamente destructivas. Y yo creo con sinceridad que una de las peores es la adicción al gasto injustificado. Ya se que a la persona adicta hay que tenerle compasión porque está enferma. Pero yo sigo pensando que uno tiene mucho más control sobre la propia vida, y que ya puestos, podíamos volvernos adictos a algo menos dañino. Yo por ejemplo tengo varios vicios, pero puedo asegurar que todos ellos son muy baratos, y además, si me cuestan algo, yo misma puedo procurarme el dinero para satisfacerlos, sin necesidad de desfalcar a mi familia por ellos. Agradezco a Dios el no haber caído en ninguno de los vicios caros (Juego, drogas, alcohol, cigarrillo, gastar dinero...) ¡Dios me libre! y sin querer juzgar a las personas que si han tenido la desgracia, pienso que cada cual tiene una pequeña oportunidad en su vida, un momento en el que puede tomar la decisión de salir de ese infierno. Yo espero que cada persona que se encuentre en esa situación, aproveche las oportunidades para salir de ella.
Otra cosa buena de una novela como esta, es que podría quedarme escribiendo eternamente sobre ella, a partir de ella y de todas las reflexiones que se me vienen a la cabeza debido a su lectura. Por ejemplo, relacionar la novela con el problema de la crisis hipotecaria de Estados Unidos. Fijandose un poco, nos daremos cuenta de que este país está repleto de Madames Bovaries... (hombres y) mujeres que lo tienen todo, pero que no están satisfechas (os) y quieren más, pero no saben exactamente qué es ese "más" que tanto añoran. Recordemos que Flaubert decía que él era Madamme de Bovary. Seguro que él también ansiaba algo, y veía en su insatisfacción los mismos rasgos reprochables que pintó en su heroína. En suma, imagino que tesis enteras se han escrito sobre este tema...
