Aww man...do you know when you read a proof, and you understand how to get from step 1 to step 2, and understand how to get from step 2 to 3 three, and ... from step 15 to step 16. And when you're finished working through the proof, you look back, and don't even understand what you just did? Don't understand the whole picture? That was the ENTIRE Advanced Calculus course for me. There was simply almost no examples in this book...I realize it is not applied, but I didn't really understand what I was doing and nothing stuck.
That said, I was much less experienced at that time. Reading Apostol right now, I'm sure it would be a great book as I've had several years to improve my mathematical sophistication. There's no doubt this is a good text, I mean, Apostol is the standard advanced analysis textbook. It's just hard if it's your first look ever at hardcore pure mathematics....Continua
