  • Me Cheeta by James Lever

Straight out of the golden age of Hollywood comes the bitchiest, most revealing memoir from one of its stars. There are scores to be settled, stars to be insulted, secrets to be hinted at none too subtley, and lost opportunities to be longed for. Oh, ... (read full critics)

  • No business like monkey business

Tarzan and His Mate, filmed in 1934, is exhibition-quality Art Moderne. It was shot day to day by uncredited co-directors, but its nominated director was the MGM production designer Cedric Gibbons, and it is visibly his creation, as were those showpi ... (read full critics)

An 'autobiography' of Cheeta, a leading light in the Tarzan movies. When I first started the book I thought, oh good, this will be very funny. Initially it held that promise and seemed to run in a similar vein to David Niven's tales with all intimate details of what the stars really got up to. I was disappointed because it had pretty good reviews but it wasn't all it was cracked up to be. I think it could have been condensed and still wouldn't lose anything.

  • I picked this up as it had received so much press once it was long listed for this year's Booker. For me it was hugely overrated, and after a hundred pages or so, this book joins the list of very few that I have abandoned.

Neither a fan of biography, nor particularly of animals, so this book was received somewhat luke-warmly... However, I loved it!

Ascerbic wit (from the 'monkey' himself no less!), glamorous scandal in 30s Hollywood, and ultimately a v poignant tale of - unrequited- friendship. I admit I had te ... (continue)
