Marc Lewis is now a prestigious university teacher, and he has been that for the last 35 years. However, he was a drug addict when he was young. He is still a drug adict because when a person plays with hard drugs, they are never really cured. You can stop having drugs alright, but the cravings never go away. Drugs are the ticket to happiness and pleasure. Pleasure without effort, love without giving anything. But they are also a curse that modifies the chemistry in the brain and switches what can be a normal person into a horrible monster. He was that kind of monster for about a decade. He experimented with heroin, morphine, all kind of medical supplies, and opium. In this book, he explains how the drugs "work" inside the brain and how they interact with the natural chemistry of the nervous system. He also explains how does it feel when you consume the drug. He is very good at this descriptions, and he is as good when he describes the horrible feelings of dispair and horror, lonelinless, depression and hatred for himself when he was at his lowest point, and how he tried so desperately to stop. I felt so badly for him because he was relly trying, but he simply couldn't. He eventually stopped, but that is because he is a special person, a gifted brain that after all those attempts to fry himself, was resilient enough to allow him to build a life, have a career, a job a wife and kids. This book is really interesting and I think it gets to the point: drugs are dangerous, very dangerous. Nobody should play with them, because only very special an capable people are able to exit that horror and build a life. He did it, but there are millions that die horrible deaths because of this curse. I really think that this book would help a lot of people and will help kids stay away from drugs. These are the kind of books that should be more abundant in our libraries.
