  • Truly Mars & Venus: The Illustrated Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus By John Gray, Ph.D.

What is love? We look for it, long for it, lose it and anxiously chase after it again. We ought to know its definition, but just when we think we've pinned it down, it changes. I read my "artistic" definition of love to my straightforward friend Elai ... (read full critics)

Regarding cross-sex communication, this book is probably one of the most widely-read and popular books. This book indeed gives me a very good framework on how men and women are differed and how their differences let to different expectations and unfavourable outcomes. I was especially impressed when I read the chapter 'Mr. Fix-it and the Home-improvement Committee'. I think this chapter points out how men and women are fundamentally different.
What makes this book a three-star instead of four is the fact that later chapters seem a little bit repetitive to me. Based on the fundamental differences, Gray illustrated how men and women handle problems differently, their different emotional needs and many other aspects with abundant examples and elaborations. When I read the first paragraph of a chapter, I would know what the point is and and what the author is trying to say and suggest. On top of this, the perspective of this book is too 'Freud'. It is too one-sided. It talks about childhood experience, about unconscious effect, about repression, and many more. What about socialization? What about social norms? What about biological predispositions? If a boarder perspective was given, this book would worth a four-star.
But then, abundant examples and elaborations are probably good when one really encountered problems with their beloved ones. This is an excellent reference book on cross-sex communication. Easy to read and interesting. I will keep one on my bookshelf in case problems do arise in future. It is going to be a great counselor.

  • Tomasz P. Szynalski: "I've recommended this book to a lot of my friends, most of them refused to read it, thinking it is too silly. It's their loss".

And I tried. But, really... no.

  • I could barely stop laughing! unfortunately it is quite ripetitive but expresses a lot of concepts that are very well chosen. It is a fair book, with no side or leaning towards the men or women. Gray is ironic and irreverent. It is a reading to relieve the brain and relfect a little!

  • A great book on relationships and psychology on different sexes. The book is simple and easy to understand. The advice are very useful and practical.

The one book you need when you want to have better relationships with the other sex (and probably know more about your own sex!)

I think this is a must read book for both men and women. Particularly the first half of the book is quite useful, yet the second half part is relatively boring and repetitive from the beginning. This book lists out a lot of examples to illustrate the author's theories. Most of them are quite easy to understand and they are just repeat what have been said before.

Anyway, this book is still a number 1 must-read book for couples or who are in love since it summaries a lot of men and women differences, providing us an insight to deal with the relationship.

  • For someone who doesn't how to communicate with the opposite sex like me. This book is a must read.
All being said, it really boils down to two things. Patience and acceptance for people.
