This was an early PD James that made me want to read more of her: there's such a difference between stuff like this and the modern-day crime novels I'm used to. James' characters rarely stray from their allotted roles and speak in full, carefully-crafted paragraphs that you know are littered with clues that you can use to solve the mystery yourself. I've never felt that in, say, a Rebus novel, though maybe that's just me being dumb.
In short, it's a reasonable page-turner, just not the best I've read, and since James is such a big name, I'm wondering if she gets better in her later books. Any offers?
