  • Peter's pick of 2008

Comments ( 0) Add to My Stories Childhood years are often the liveliest part of autobiographies but rarely can they have been so colourful as J G Ballard's in pre-war Shanghai, the wicked 'Paris of the Orient' in the 1930s. His memories of it permeat ... (read full critics)

  • A crash course in survival

No one would be allowed to have J. G. Ballard’s career nowadays. When you consider the life of the average English novelist, what Cyril Connolly called the poverty of experience seems almost overwhelming, as the budding writer moves from school to un ... (read full critics)

  • A good biography

It seemed that j G Ballard lived a quiet suburban life bring up his kids in Shepperton and writing his own brand of science fiction. It is interesting all the way through and his observations on the post war changes are interesting.

Ballard, James G. (2008). Miracles of Life. London: Harper Perennial. 2008.

Peace, I realised, was more threatening because the rules that sustained war, however evil, were suspended. [p. 107]

The forerunners of Star Trek, they described an American imperium colonising the entire universe, which they turned in a cheerful, optimistic hell, a 1950s American suburb paved with good intentions and populated by Avon ladies in spacesuit. Eerily, this may prove to be an accurate prophecy. [p. 165]

Science fiction is now the only place where the future survives, just as television costume dramas are the only place where the past survives. [p. 194]

The nuclear family, dominated by an overworked mother, is in many ways deeply unnatural, as is marriage itself, part of the huge price we pay to control the male sex. [p. 228]

Parole sante e ben scritte, vecchio Jim. Mi mancherai.
