For years I have kept on reading Bukowski's prose while carefully avoiding his poetry. The title "Mockingbird Wish Me Luck" was tantalizing though, so I plunged into my first, thorough, cover-to-cover reading ever of a poetry book.

I found a gold mine of easily accessible stuff (there is some American slang but nothing even a non-native speaker can't grasp at the second or third reading), yet profound.
Matter ranges from elegies to the living (no one like Bukowski gives you the impression of walking among the dead), to small epics like "ww2", to pieces of grand guignol like "carnival".

    He had style.

style is the answer to everything -
a fresh way to approach a dull or a
    dangerous thing.
to do a dull thing with style
is preferable to doing a dangerous thing
    without it.

    Joan of Arc had style
    John the Baptist
    Christ
    Socrates
    Caesar,
    Garcia Lorca.

    style is the difference,
    a way of doing,
    a way of being done.

six herons standing quietly in a pool of water
or you walking out of the bathroom naked
    without seeing
    me.
