The literature of the period 1890-1930 is in many of its features still very much our literature. Few periods contain such an extraordinary wealth of major innovative writers…and few have to such an extent broken down traditional national frontiers in matters of literary and cultural concern.

Apart from the texts themselves, this book examines the ideas, the groupings and the social tensions out of which Modernism emerged. It identifies those elements of shock and crisis crucial to stylistic development, and provides biographies of its leading exponents together with extensive bibliographical material.

Finally, the contributors to this book raise questions about the nature of critical analysis itself and the kinds of analysis to which this disturbing literature might be thought susceptible.
