The brand-new mystery series starring the brilliant, beloved, and slightly off-balance sleuth from the USA Network's hit show!

Monk's house is being fumigated, and he has nowhere to go. Fortunately, his assistant Natalie and her daughter are kind enough to welcome him into their home. Unfortunately, their home is not quite up to Monk's standards of cleanliness and order.

But while Monk attempts to arrange his surroundings just so, something else needs to be put straight. The death of a dog at the local firehouse-on the same night as a fatal house fire-has led Monk into a puzzling mystery. And much to his horror, he's going to have to dig through a lot of dirt to find the answer.

Monk's first adventure in novel form is an entertaining read. If you enjoy the television series then you will enjoy the book, too. Monk is even more eccentric in book form, it seems. This is a very quick and easy read, and packs in quite a bit of humour, too. It is very true to the established television characters but the book, of course, has more depth and complexity than the television show, which for me would be the principle reason for reading it. The writing is very capable but it is pure pulp fiction: no literary pretensions here, which suits the fact that it is a television adaptation. If you are ever looking for a light, entertaining read that has an uplifting conclusion, then look no further than Monk in book form.

The plot unfolds like the impish spawn of Sherlock Holmes and Miss Marple, with the extra-fast pace of television drama: there is no fat on the story or beautiful but unnecessary descriptions of the countryside, people, or the look of buildings. The tale gets where it's going very fast without taking any scenic routes. There was also an unexpected double-twist in the final pages which I found very satisfying. I really loved the ingenious and convoluted way Monk's mind worked to solve seemingly unsolvable cases. The scenes where Monk explains how he figured things out are priceless.
