  Tutto si svolge in una sola giornata. Clarissa Dalloway, ricca signora cinquantenne, sposata e madre, sta preparando un party in casa sua. Mentre è presa dall'organizzazione dell'evento, si perde nei ricordi relativi alla sua vita passata. Vicino a lei, scorre la vita di Septimus, suo alter-ego ed ex soldato scampato alla guerra, ma pervaso da un tormento che non lo abbandona mai..

  Ho fatto la tesi su di lei e sulla sua tecnica narrativa, lo Stream of Consciousness. Difficile, indubbiamente, ma bello bello bello! I pensieri prendono vita, lasciando scivolare in secondo piano la trama. L'inconscio emerge sulla pagina in tutta la sua completezza, con i suoi conflitti, le ambiguità e con le cose aberranti che possono caratterizzarlo.

  This book successfully demonstrates what stream of consciousness is. Reading the book was like going on a tour in London a century ago. Since then, I've been more aware of how my mind works.

  Unique

  This story is told not just from a first-person perspective, but in a "stream of consciousness" style that is still quite unusual. Some people seem to think it's a difficult read but I can't agree.

  a great book that deserves a 10-stars rating, although it is not always easy to read for a non-native english speaker.
  the style is sublime, and the characters are described so beautifully nuanced, i guess, as only women can do.
  A perfect book to end 2010!

  At last I reached the end of this book. It is the most difficult I've ever read, I can't say the effort was really worth it either, but I didn't give up halfway only because I like Virginia Woolf too much <3. Her style is unique and stunning! This book gave me a chance to make some deep 'thinking over'.
  Wonderful ending, remarking how love matters more than anything.

  What can I say about this book - Woolf is one of my favourite authors and I was blown away by this novel the first time I read it. I find myself going back to it again and again. Her beautiful way with words coupled with her ability to explore the deepest recesses of the human mind make for a dense but ultimately rewarding read. The most common thing I hear about Woolf's work, and this novel in particular, is that it doesn't have any real plot. To me that's missing the point of what she was trying to achieve and overlooks the essence of what makes this novel so great. True, there is no real plot, but Woolf was a keen and brilliant observer of human nature and her talents lie foremost in translating human experience onto the page in the purest and most lucid way possible. There's no plot because our minds don't work in a linear sequence of beginning-middle-end. My advice to any would-be readers of Mrs Dalloway is don't try to understand everything in this novel, just go with the flow of the narrative and enjoy it for what it is, which is writing at its absolute best.
