I read a comment from Amazon and this is close to what I want to say. So I quote here:
"My American Journey" is an excellent story and example that shows us what possessing a strong motivation and integrity can lead to. You certainly do not need to be an American to appreciate the positive attitudes and the message that Powell sends through his book.
I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to read about an interesting life, leadership, military history, and politics. "
Powell's story tells us that one doesn't have to be born rich, being extremely intelligent, graduate from a prestigious school etc. to be successful.
One can also ascent to higher positions by sticking to his dreams (Powell has turned down many luring opportunities / short-cuts to power simply because they don't fit his personality or interests) and being honest.
